Darone Sassounian is a DJ and record collector from Los Angeles. He is also the head of the indie artist management and booking label, Rocky Hill. He focuses on bringing an array of sounds onto the dance floor - ranging from styles introduced to him as a child, to sounds self-discovered as an adult.
The name “Rocky Hill” is inspired by the neighborhood Sassounian was born and raised in. The neighborhood is a personal symbol of solace and safety, which correlates with the philosophy of the label. Varying in style, the label has a limitless viewpoint. Rocky Hill knows no boundaries, and its main purpose is to set out on an endless soul searching musical expedition.
Recently, Darone went on a quest for Armenian and Oriental rarities in the Middle East and Europe. Searching for sounds that he grew up with and the sounds that he had yet to discover. Influenced by music made in the 70’s and 80’s, his goal is to approach a contemporary audience by clashing the old with the new. Styles ranging from disco, soul, international obscurities and house.
In the 2019, Darone released two mixtapes via Aquarium Drunkard. Focusing on showcasing a handful of Armenian rarities found on his travels abroad, blending them with Western Gospel, Boogie, Modern Soul, and other international favorites. Sounds from the same era, from different parts of the world — sounds that he discovered in the Middle East, Europe and in the US, paired with sounds that were made at the same time in different countries.
Darone Sassounian is born and raised in Los Angeles. He previously was the buyer at Backside Records and the label coordinator at Ubiquity Records. He currently represents and works with artists such as, Bosq, Basil & Rogers, David Haffner, Rocky Hill Corps and Thomas Blondet.
